Where To Go. What To Bring.

A few friends said they were worried that being parents would cause a big change in their lifestyles. It is a very valid concern, and unless you have a nanny to look after Baby 24/7, it’s also absolutely true. BUT, it does not mean the end of all the things you used to do… Unless you’re a fan of extreme sports. Then it’s just a matter of patience because Babies grow right? (Ok sorry, that wasn’t very helpful)

Thankfully for Dan and I, the couple activity we spend most time doing is eating and travelling. We are planning a trip sometime later in the year so I’ll blog about that when it happens. For now, the eating’s more important -where to go and what to bring.

Where’s a good place for me, is anyplace with a nursing room.

Being a new mother, I still can’t nurse Renee with the practiced ease I see some mothers do. They put on a nursing cloak, swiftly maneuver Baby under it and look like they’re only shielding Baby from sight. I unfortunately do too much fumbling to use the cloak(unless they start manufacturing invisible cloaks) so until I master it, a nursing room is a must.

City Sq Mall and United Sq has nice nursing rooms. For about a week, I actually thought they were the only shopping malls with nursing rooms. I know. What was I thinking right? After finally thinking to google, here’s what I found :

A great article on where the best nursing rooms are, and a compiled list of the nursing rooms in Singapore. I’m surprised I didn’t do this earlier and more surprised I’ve never noticed these nursing rooms in the malls before!

We headed to Bangkok Jam (blogged about it here) today because it’s one of our favourite places to eat plus I wanted to see how nice the nursing room was.

We both went “waaaa…” when we walked in.

Then we went “waaaa…” again when we saw the diaper change area

I was getting my cam out at this pt and planning Renee’s new room.

What if your favourite eat is at a place without a nursing room? Time your meal. Leave the house just after Baby feeds, and you have a 2hr window to go for a meal (I’m assuming Baby feeds every 2 hrs, and that you won’t take an hr to get to your destination).

Even for short trips, we’ll bring her diaper bag in case of untimely bottom or burping accidents. Diapers, wet wipes, diaper cream, an extra set of clothes (including mittens and booties), a cloak(for emergency situations) and a quilt are the standard things in my bag.

We also bring the stroller out so that she has a place to sleep in while we eat. I tried to go shopping with Renee once – just me and her. Dan dropped us off and said he’ll collect us in an hour. All was fine and I was walking around the mall with a proud “I am an independent mother” look until Renee got fussy and wanted to be carried. Then I looked like “never plan outing” mother as I carried Renee with both hands (she’s squirmy and too heavy to handle with one), pushed the stroller with one foot and walked after it as it rolled a short distance. Where is my baby carrier when I need it?! So I learn – future alone outings, bring stroller AND baby carrier.

Alternatively, bring someone else with you. An extra pair of hands is always handy when a baby is present.

Not quite like the ol’ days, but good in a different way =)

Same reaction for me when I re-visited the Great World City nursing room recently with my 6mo.

Not sure when they done up the nursing area. Couple yrs back with my older boy, their nursing room is possibly the worst. It used to be like a solitary cell with no ventilation, no facility, nothing! Just a room u can lock and a seating!!!

Gd job for Great World!

Tip – you can also feed in car (ie after u parked) if all else fail…also buy u more time till next baby feed time :)
