We made it!
We made it there and back! *pumps fist in air*
I was a little apprehensive when we were packing (a big luggage) for the trip-there was such an awful lot to bring! Dan commented that we’ve never been so prepared for a trip before. You have to understand – we went for our honeymoon (a month in Europe) with only two cabinsized bags. So to fill a big suitcase for a 4night stay in Perth is some serious packing on our part.
Anyhow, we were up bright-eyed and bushy tailed on departure morning despite having packed til late the night before (old habits die hard). Even Renee was up at 530am and didn’t fall back asleep like she normally does at that time. Perhaps she sensed the excitement in the air =)
We made our way to the airport, did all the necessary and waited to board. I became increasingly nervous as it approached our takeoff time (905am). Everybody told me to nurse her on takeoff and descent so I timed her feed to coincide with the takeoff. My worst fears came true when she got hungry the moment we got on the plane and demanded to be fed immediately (little wonder nobody uses the term feed on request). I didn’t take into account all that taxi-ing time and she was done nursing before the plane took off. THEN she started to cry as the plane was taking off. Luckily it only took us a short while to realise it was because we wrapped her too warm too early. And we also learnt afterwards that not all babies get fussy during takeoff and descent. What do we know, first time parent travellers.
She was an (eskimo) angel on our way there, and slept in the baby cot when it was mealtime =)
She also made a new friend!
When we arrived in Perth, we traipsed to our rented car and set her up in the car seat.
Travelling young has taught her some life skills - like staying strapped in while in a moving vehicle. We couldn’t seem to teach her that lesson in Singapore.
She was also better at staying in a pram.
And in a carrier when we went shopping.
I thought the carrier was a great idea for the outdoors when it got cold because she was snuggled against me or Dan. In the past, she would only want to be carried the natural way – with bare arms. So really, thankfully she was acceptable to these alternatives on the trip!
Our first family vacation has shown me that truly, life will never be quite the same with a child. It’s not for the better or worse. It’s just different. While I miss hot meals, eating together with Dan instead of us taking turns, and running our lives on her time(for now only I hope), I have learnt to appreciate little moments in the day more. Plus all experiences take on a different dimension when you see them through her eyes. It really is like a new lease on life!
Oh and I’m not sure if you noticed, but all the pictures I picked has her smiling. She negates our every inconvenience with just a smile. It is a lethal currency.
