A Day At A Time

Congratulations Miss Jane!! And Miss Jane is the proud mother of a healthy and cute baby boy who arrived recently =) When I visited her at the hospital (which incidentally was the same one I was in), I stood at the foot of her bed looking at her look at her newborn. All the feelings I had when Renee arrived came back to me.

The joy, the “don’t know what to expect”, the adrenalin, the joy, the “I don’t need sleep because I can stare at my newborn forever” feelings…. You know those? And I did mention the joy, right? Guessing that she was probably feeling all of those things made me feel so happy for her – it is true that joy is multiplied when it is shared =)

I look at Renee now and see how much she has grown from when I first held her in my arms in the hospital. I wonder all the time if I will cease to be amazed that this little girl (girl! Not a baby anymore!) is mine, that she was inside me for 9 months. I wonder if I will cease to be amazed that she can actually understand me and respond appropriately when not so long ago, it was a struggle for her to hold her head up.

(Such a little girl already right? She’s even interested in world news =o)

One of the latest fun thing (for us) to do is ask her questions like “Who is a pretty girl? Put your hands up!”, to which she will then put both hands in the air. We vary the questions – “Who wants to go out? Put your hands up!” and “Who is hungry? Put your hands up!”. I don’t think she really understands what we’re asking and is only reacting to “Put your hands up!”. But thinking that she does amuses us because we sometimes ask very silly questions like “who thinks she has the awesomest Mommy/Daddy” =P

Another fun thing we do, is play peek-a-boo. Yeah, that age-old game that all children never tire of. She actually understands when we tell her to go and hide! She turns a bend so she cannot see us, and when we shout “Peek-a-boo!”, she runs out to greet us with shrieks and laughter. This keeps us occupied for quite a long time (again, long in baby time is maybe 15mins) until she gets distracted by the dog. Or cat. Or lint on the floor.

I think all parents worry at the back of their minds, if their child will be able to communicate with them. Therefore it is a relief for us to know that Renee understands us and reacts to what we say. Even though her reaction is sometimes the opposite of what we want (dare we hope it’s only a passing phase?) and “No!” to her means “Do it again”, just being able to communicate with her is a joy.

Before we know it, we will be having actual conversations with her about school, about what she is up to during her day and hopefully not so soon, about boys…

Pondering about how a child is gonna turn out is clearly not very good ‘daydreaming’ activity. I think the key is to take it a day at a time.
